A band of travelling magicians spends an eventful night at the house of an eminent doctor, who is keen to disprove reports of paranormal activity, mixing with those both above and below stairs as they do so, in Bergman’s disquieting 1840s-set horror film. Exquisite photography, expert performances, and a discomfitingly uneven tone combine to beguilingly unpredictable effect.
