Berberian Sound Studio

Peter Strickland | 2012 | ★★★★
A mild-mannered, bird-fancying bachelor arrives in Italy to work as the sound supervisor on a film filled with – unbeknownst to him – sex, violence, and depravity, who unsurprisingly finds working with its lecherous director, short-tempered producer, and assorted whispering minions decidedly (and increasingly) difficult. Excellent sound design, enigmatic plotting, dexterous editing, and a majestic yet understated central performance combine to unsettling effect, in Strickland’s distinctive psychological horror flick.
