David Gordon Green | 2013 | ★★★½
Painting lines on a barely used road way out in the wilderness, two disparate souls – one middle-aged, quiet, and thoughtful (Paul Rudd), the other (his brother-in-common-law, played by Emile Hirsch) young, brash, and horny – alternately bond and come to blows as they eat, sleep, and work together for five days at a time, in this slowburn character comedy – a remake of Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson’s 2011 film, Á annan veg (Either Way). Skilled performances, unpredictable plotting, off-the-wall characterisation, and a scene-stealing cameo from Lance LeGault (his final screen appearance) combine to entertaining effect.
